As a single-use item, these are harmful to the environment because of the resources used and should be kept safe out of landfill and reused.
Rubber bands made from rubber sap (natural latex) are biodegradable, but take 15-20 years to decompose. It's better to reuse them. Synthetic rubber made from oil takes several times this long.
Reduce the need for rubber bands by using string or ribbon to secure an item.
Request that items typically bound with a rubber band be replaced with a more environmental alternative.
If you have a rubber band collection at home or work, ask if the organisation you received them from will take them back for reuse.
