Warning

Whiteware such as refrigerators can contain hazardous substances. Please recycle conscientiously.

Education

This online article on the Ministry for the Environment website describes some of the environmental issues related to whiteware.

Reuse and recycling of whiteware such as refrigerators is considered environmentally preferable to landfilling, because landfilling:

  • results in the loss of valuable materials including ferrous and non-ferrous metals. To extract from landfill, process, assemble and transport these materials involves enormous amounts of resources
  • places pressure on landfill space

Reduce

Rather than buying new, a good second-hand refrigerator will be cheaper, and better for the environment.

Instead of replacing a non-working refrigerator, see if it can be repaired. Try Appliance Repair Care or Murray's Appliance Repairs.

Reuse

On-sell your pre-loved, working refrigerator.

Donate your working refrigerator to a good cause.

Recycle

Refrigerators can be recycled at the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre (fees apply).

Disposal

Take to the waste transfer station, scrap metal area.
