Warning

As a gimmicky toy, these single-use items are harmful to the environment because of the resources used in their manufacture and their likely pollution of the natural environment once the novelty wears off.

Education

Loom bands made from natural latex are biodegradable, but take 15-20 years to decompose. It's better to reuse them. Synthetic rubber made from oil takes several times longer to biodegrade.

Reuse

Take surplus loom bands and rubber bands to a charity/secondhand shop or the ReUse Academy.

Make a useful item from rubber bands such as a bookmark, pencil holder or grip, stress ball. key cover, toy. Check Pinterest online for ideas and instructions.

Disposal

Keep synethetic latex rubber from landfill wherever possible as it does not decompose.
