Warning

Compressed gas cylinders contain gas stored under considerable pressure, which can present a significant hazard.

If your cylinder has been subjected to fire, please return to your LPG provider immediately.

If you are unsure about the date or integrity of your cylinder, please do not use it.

Worksafe has suggestions on how to use gas cylinders safely, as does this advice from Rockgas.

Education

Learn how to read the labelling on your gas cylinder.

Any cylinder without a gas name label should be returned to the supplier for replacement.

Gas bottle/cylinder testing facts: "In New Zealand, BBQ gas bottles must be tested every ten years. It is illegal to fill a gas bottle that is past its expiry date but you are allowed to use it, past the expiry date, if it still contains gas."

Reuse

Gas bottles are designed for reuse.

Recycle

Empty gas cylinders can be put in the scrap metal bin at the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre.

If the tanks have some gas in them, please check with Rockgas if they will empty the tanks for you.

Another possibility is registering the tanks for drop-off at the next Council hazardous waste collection day.

Disposal

Check if your cylinder is properly empty prior to recycling.
