Construction Waste

"Construction and demolition waste makes up 40–50% of New Zealand’s total waste going to landfill, according to government and council documents." Read more in this BRANZ Level article.

"C&D waste makes up around half of all waste going to landfill in New Zealand, and while its environmental impact in landfill is negligible it represents a substantial loss of resources and energy. Timber, concrete, gib board and metal are some of the most common components of clean fill waste – much of which could potentially have second lives." Reiterated in this 3R Reimagineers article.

Given the volume of construction waste it makes sense to keep it above ground and reuse it wherever possible. The Whanganui District Council acknowledges construction waste constitutes a large proportion of the waste stream to landfill and is looking at options to reduce this by reuse and recycling.
